Are Solar Panels Worth It in Ireland?
A grounded way to judge solar PV for your own home, based on generation, electricity use, self-consumption, cost and future plans.

The short answer
Solar panels can be worthwhile in Ireland, but there is no honest yes-or-no answer for every home. Value depends on what the system costs, how much electricity it produces, how much of that electricity you use yourself, the price you avoid paying for imported power, and what your supplier pays for exports.
Ireland does not need Mediterranean weather for solar PV to work. Panels generate in daylight and continue to operate on overcast days, although below their rated output. SEAI says roughly 75% of annual solar generation occurs from May to September, so seasonal variation should be built into expectations.
How much electricity could a system produce?
SEAI gives a useful national example: a well-located system of about 20 square metres, rated at roughly 3kW, could generate around 2,600kWh a year. It describes this as more than 40% of the average annual electricity demand of an Irish home.
That is an illustration, not a promise for your roof. Output changes with location, orientation, pitch, shading, equipment, downtime and weather. Ask an installer for a property-specific annual-generation estimate and the assumptions behind it. Compare those assumptions across quotes.
Self-consumption usually matters most
Electricity used in the home while the panels are generating reduces the units you buy from your supplier. Surplus can be exported, stored in a battery or diverted to hot water, but each route has different economics.
A home with daytime demand may use a larger share of its generation directly. Remote working, electric water heating, an EV or flexible appliance use can help, provided loads are scheduled safely. A mostly empty home may export more. Your smart-meter data can show when electricity is used and exported, making it more useful than a monthly bill total alone.
Export payments help, but rates change
Under the Clean Export Guarantee, suppliers pay eligible microgenerators for metered electricity exported to the grid. CRU explains that the supplier pays for each exported kWh recorded through the billing cycle and displays the units and rate on the bill or a separate statement.
There is no single national export price to assume. Suppliers set and change their rates, so use the current rate from your supplier when estimating returns. Revenue currently exempts up to €400 of qualifying annual microgeneration profit for each qualifying person named on the electricity bill, with the scheme extended to the end of 2028. Check the conditions if export income may be significant.
Cost, grant and payback
Payback is the initial net cost divided by annual savings and export income, adjusted for realistic running or replacement costs. It is sensitive to future electricity prices and household behaviour, so a precise long-term number is an estimate.
SEAI's 2026 Solar PV grant is worth up to €1,800 for an eligible home. Its programme median costs provide a market sense check, but your quote still needs to match your property and equipment. Read the solar panel cost guide and grant guide before relying on a sales payback figure.
Signs solar may suit your home
- Your roof is in sound condition and has a useful unshaded area.
- You expect to remain in the home long enough to benefit from the investment.
- Your electricity use is meaningful, especially during daylight hours or can be shifted.
- The installer provides a clear design, generation assumptions and written scope.
- The price remains sensible without relying on aggressive electricity-price forecasts.
Reasons to investigate further first
- Heavy shading, a roof needing near-term repair or very limited usable area.
- A quote sized mainly to maximise panel count rather than match demand and export economics.
- Payback claims that omit battery replacement, BER or excluded electrical work.
- Planning uncertainty for a protected structure, Architectural Conservation Area or non-standard installation.
- Short ownership horizon or finance costs that materially change the return.
Make the decision with your own figures
Use SEAI's Solar Electricity Calculator as a starting point, then replace defaults with your roof, tariff, usage and quote. The calculator currently models a simple PV system and does not assess a battery or immersion diverter, so those need separate analysis.
